A team from the laboratory of Professor Hasuda Yuichi of Faculty of Science and Engineering Department of Information and Electronic Engineering Teikyo University, and the robotics club RoboLab won second place in the domestic qualifying round of the 16th International Innovation Contest (iCAN'25) held on Sunday, April 13, 2025, and was selected to represent Japan at the world competition along with first place winner Aoyama Gakuin University.
iCAN'25 is an international contest in which participants propose applications using MEMS devices and compete with the results of their prototypes. After the Japan preliminary round, the top teams are sent to the world finals. The team's research theme is "An automatic sampling machine for mosquitoes and flies that transmit infectious diseases." The sampling machine is equipped with an AI object detection function to attract and capture mosquitoes that transmit malaria and dengue fever, which kill 700,000 people a year. A monitoring system equivalent to that of a nuclear power plant transmits real-time information to researchers on the appearance of sanitary pests and environmental values such as carbon dioxide concentration, temperature, humidity, and illuminance. At the domestic preliminary round, the judges praised the technology, which combines robotics and AI. Furthermore, due to its high level of completion, it received high praise, such as being recommended for commercialization.
The world championships will be held in Hong Kong in October 2025.
We look forward to seeing the Hasuda Laboratory and RoboLab's future development of robotics and AI products and their success at world competitions.
